The drug sildenafil is made by Pfizer - and was originally developed as a treatment for high blood pressure, a symptom of which is erectile dysfunction (ED).
In 2004 studies of its safety showed it was safe for men, but not women, to use together because of possible issues such as heart problems.
However, in the year that Pfizer announced it would stop making sildenafil, its stock price fell by more than a third, and it suffered series of marketing lapses.
Earlier this year, the regulator also removed marketing authorisation for a new class of blood pressure treatment for female sexual problems - Viagra 5mg, which was already available overseas.

The girl, "Aaliyah," could be no older than 4 years old, but the video was taken in middle of the night.
